A massive warehouse fire broke out Thursday evening at Consolidated Supply Co., a plumbing supply business on NW 42nd Street on the border of Fremont and Ballard, sending a plume of dark smoke over the Ship Canal visible from across the city.

Seattle Fire Department upgraded the blaze to a three-alarm fire. According to the Seattle Times, more than 100 firefighters and 15 engines responded. Wind drove the flames quickly through the building, and firefighters shifted to a defensive strategy, spraying water from ladders outside rather than entering the building. The roof eventually collapsed. A fireboat pumped water from the Ship Canal when pressure dropped in the area. One firefighter sustained a minor injury; no civilians were reported hurt.

Leary Avenue was closed for hours, affecting residents throughout the Ross Park and Frelard neighborhoods. The cause remains under investigation.

The Seattle Times has full coverage of Thursday’s response. We’ll post an update if there’s additional information released about the cause and damage to surrounding buildings.
