A lost cat named Grasshopper turned a stretch of light poles in lower Fremont into a small lesson in neighborliness this week, capped off by a hand-lettered “FOUND!!!” sign thanking the whole community.

Pat, who lives in lower Fremont, put up flyers as soon as Grasshopper went missing. Pat said the response from neighbors was immediate and steady throughout the search.

“Everybody has been SO WONDERFUL,” Pat said. “As I was putting up flyers the past several days, folks would stop and wish me good luck in finding him, and today when I was putting up the ‘Found’ flyers so many strangers stopped and said they were so relieved because they’d been worrying about him.”

The mystery had a simple ending: Grasshopper had been locked inside the basement of Pat’s brother’s house next door the whole time, and didn’t start meowing to announce himself until Thursday morning.

Pat said the experience, stressful as it was, left a lasting impression.

“This whole experience, as harrowing as it’s been for me, just also gave me the warm fuzzies,” Pat said. “It really revealed to me how connected our little community is, and how much people care.”
