Celebrate the season at the Fremont Arts Council’s May Day celebration
The Fremont Arts Council is entering its busiest time of year. Most Fremonsters are familiar with their Solstice Parade scheduled for June 21 but there’s another annual event this weekend: the May Day celebration on May 3 from 1 to 7 p.m.
Located at Meridian Playground in Wallingford, this free, all ages event is full of activities that encourage people to celebrate the transition from spring to summer. According to the FAC website, there’s a community potluck picnic, flower headdress making, children’s crafts and games, live music, and the main event, which is Maypole dancing.
“We’re about dancing and having fun,” said Cindy Krafft, Fremont Arts Council Board Vice President. “We just kind of grab a ribbon and go for it. It’s very free form.”
There are activities for all ages. “We have both a kids’ Maypole and an adult Maypole. There are kids’ games, a drum circle and a couple different bands,” Krafft added.
No RSVP is needed and participants are welcome to join the potluck. “Bring whatever you want, especially vegan and gluten-free dishes, they’re always definitely encouraged,” Krafft said. “Just bring a dish and serving utensils. We provide plates and eating utensils.”
Krafft noted that the FAC is still looking for set-up and take-down volunteers. Prospective volunteers can show up early or stay late if they’d like to lend a hand.
Due to the size of the Maypoles and the need for picnic shelter space, Meridian Park was chosen years ago as the location for FAC’s May Day. “It’s the best location that we have found,” Krafft said, and she added that if there’s a location in Fremont with enough space for Maypoles for people to dance around, to let them know.
“Involvement in the FAC is more about a state of mind than a state of geography,” according to the FAC website, so whether the event is in Wallingford or Fremont, creative and playful minds can attend and help build community through art.
