Fremont in the Wild: Neigh-borhood shows super bowl spirit

Just in time for Super Bowl Sunday, a crosswalk pole at 39th and Fremont has sprouted an unexpected ornament: a Seahawks-themed horse head complete with what appears to be a neck of green feathers.

The blue-and-white horse head – possibly a hat repurposed for street art – now watches over the intersection, ready to cheer on the Seahawks as they take on the Patriots at 3:30 p.m. today.

The creative installation comes courtesy of Black Jar Follies, a local artist who has a knack for adding whimsical touches to the neighborhood. Their social media feeds document years of Fremont interventions: pumpkin heads for the Lenin statue in October and elaborate Luminata displays with the Fremont Arts Council.

It’s the kind of spontaneous public art that makes Fremont what it is. While other neighborhoods might settle for window flags or yard signs, here someone climbed a pole to outfit city infrastructure with game day spirit.

Black Jar Follies sells paintings and masks through their Etsy shop and stays active in Fremont Arts Council events. They’re the kind of neighbors who turn ordinary street corners into moments of surprise.

Update 2/12: Black Jar Follies is one talented neighbor, not a team. We’ve updated the article accordingly.
