In most neighborhoods a broken microwave ends up in a landfill. In Fremont it becomes a literary institution.
Behold: the microwave-turned-Little Free Library, complete with a respectable collection that includes “Idiot’s Guide to Photography,” “White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America,” and a “Not for Tourists Guide to Seattle.” The books are arranged inside where Hot Pockets once reheated.
This is quintessential Fremont problem-solving. Need a weatherproof container for sharing books? Why buy something new when a decommissioned kitchen appliance will do the job perfectly? The microwave’s insulated door keeps the rain out, the metal body is sturdy, and let’s be honest, it’s a lot more interesting than a standard wooden box.
Little Free Libraries have been popping up all over Fremont for years and the creativity is off the charts. From vintage furniture to repurposed cabinets, our neighbors are turning upcycling into an art form. Very on-brand for a neighborhood that turned a VW Beetle into a famous troll snack.
