Fremont Neighbor Notes for May 3-8
Hello, neighbors! Welcome to “Fremont Neighbor Notes,” a Friday guide to what’s happening around our community in the coming week.
May 3: Fremont Arts Council May Day – The Fremont Arts Council is entering its busiest time of year. Most Fremonsters are familiar with their Solstice Parade scheduled for June 21 but there’s another annual event this weekend: the May Day celebration on May 3 from 1 to 7 p.m. Located at Meridian Playground in Wallingford, this free, all ages event is full of activities that encourage people to celebrate the transition from spring to summer. According to the FAC website, there’s a community potluck picnic, flower headdress making, children’s crafts and games, live music, and the main event, which is Maypole dancing.
May 3-4: Zoo Doo Pickups – The Woodland Park Zoo is hosting its May Zoo Doo Sale on May 3 & 4, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., where visitors can pick up pre-ordered Zoo Doo compost. Sign-ups for pickup appointments are available on the zoo’s website. Customers must hand-shovel the compost into their own containers, with options ranging from 25 gallons ($16.50) to 100 gallons ($55), and truckload options for pickup trucks from 300 gallons ($85) to 550 gallons ($125). No trailers are permitted, and the event proceeds rain or shine with no weather-related refunds.
May 4: Dusty Strings’ guitar sessions – As Best You Can with Jalaine Madura – Looking to share your guitar solos and hear what fellow musicians are working on? Join Dusty Strings’ “As Best You Can” guitar sessions hosted by Jalaine Madura every Sunday from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM via Zoom. The name means exactly what it says: play whatever you’re currently practicing as best you can in a supportive, no-pressure environment. Each participant typically enjoys three to four opportunities to play during each session, and guitarists of all genres and skill levels are warmly welcomed. See the Dusty Strings’ website for more.
May 8: Route 40 Listen and Learn – Major utility and transportation construction begins in Fremont this month, with Seattle Public Utilities replacing the water main on Fremont Ave N between N 34th and N 35th St while SDOT’s contractor Jansen Construction starts work on the Route 40 Project. The construction will affect N 36th St, Fremont Place N, and Fremont Ave N. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce invites community members to learn more about these projects and their impacts during a “Listen & Learn” call on Thursday, May 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. via Microsoft Teams.
