Heads up, neighbors! Big improvements are coming to Route 40, and while the end result should make transit faster and streets safer, the construction phase might be a bit of a headache. Work in Fremont is set to begin in the Spring and continue through the year.
What’s Changing?
If you’ve ever tripped on a busted sidewalk or sat in traffic wondering why buses crawl through Fremont, this project is aiming to help. Here’s what’s planned:
- Better sidewalks to make walking around safer and easier.
- Improved storm drains to prevent flooding and puddles.
- Smoother pavement (goodbye, bumpy roads!).
- A new water main under Fremont Ave N (between N 34th St and N 35th St), thanks to Seattle Public Utilities.
Once finished, the project should cut transit times by 5-10% overall and 14-17% between Ballard and Downtown—which means fewer delays for bus riders and less congestion for everyone.
What to Expect During Construction
Let’s be real—this is going to be messy for a while. Here’s how it might affect daily life in Fremont:
- Lane closures and detours—Traffic is bound to get tricky.
- Sidewalk and driveway disruptions—Some spots will be harder to access.
- Temporary bus stop changes—Route 40 riders, keep an eye out for updates.
- Less parking—So plan ahead if you’re driving.
- Noise, dust, and general construction chaos—It won’t be pretty, but it’s temporary!
According to an SDOT representative who spoke at the February Fremont Neighborhood Council meeting, they will deconflict Fremont lane closures with the Ballard Bridge closures. Whew!
Let’s Keep Fremont Businesses Thriving
With construction impacting foot traffic and parking, it’s more important than ever to support our local shops, cafés, and restaurants. Many of them will be open throughout the project, so let’s keep showing up for our neighborhood businesses.
Stay in the Loop
I’ll be keeping an eye on the project and sharing updates as things move forward. In the meantime, you can check out SDOT’s Route 40 Project Page for the latest official info.
