Update: Work begins on historic B.F. Day Elementary windows

,

B.F. Day Elementary School, Seattle’s longest continuously-operating school building, has begun a $5.8 million window replacement project, as previously reported here. Contractors are currently preparing the historic building by repairing concrete details around window openings, with the actual window installation scheduled for summer 2026. The project will replace over 200 windows dating from 1892, 1901, and 1916 with new thermally broken aluminum-clad wood windows that match the building’s historic appearance. Due to the school’s landmark status, the new windows must preserve the original aesthetic while providing modern energy efficiency and temperature control for students.
