After years of construction detours, lane closures, and noise disruptions, the Ship Canal Water Quality Project is entering its final phases in Fremont. The project, which was designed to reduce stormwater and sewage overflows into the Ship Canal, is still on track for full completion in 2027, but Fremont residents will see some key improvements sooner.
According to the latest project update, here’s what you need to know:
- Leary Way NW is now open to all lanes of traffic. Woohoo!
- NW 36th St, between Leary Way NW and 3rd Ave NW, remains closed until mid-2025
- 2nd Ave, between Canal St and Leary Way NW, remains closed
- Within the site, crews continue installing utilities, grading, and restoring the site and sidewalks
You should still anticipate:
- Trucks entering and leaving the site
- Fans running during work hours to provide fresh air to crews working in the shaft
- Heavy equipment in the area
- Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site
Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 6 pm; and some Saturdays from 9 am to 6 pm.
For many in Fremont, this project has been a test of patience, with ongoing traffic congestion and business impacts. But the end is near (just in time for Route 40 construction)! Once completed, the SCWQP will prevent an estimated 75 million gallons of untreated stormwater and sewage from spilling into the canal each year, improving water quality and protecting wildlife.
Seattle Public Utilities continues to provide updates via its project website and community engagement portal. I’ll continue to track this project and post updates here as well!
