UPDATE: As of 3/28/2025, construction appears to be complete and the third lane is now open!
For those who traverse between Upper Fremont and Wallingford, especially Fremont youth who walk to Hamilton Middle School or Lincoln High School, the North 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge is a safe, reliable way to cross Aurora.
Since last fall, construction crews have been working on the North 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge, which has impacted pedestrians, drivers and transit riders. The project is nearing completion so here’s an update on what’s happening.
Seattle Department of Transportation crews are installing a seismic retrofit, which according to the project website includes:
- Retrofitting the bridge’s footing
- Installing carbon fiber wrapping to strengthen the bridge’s towers
- Repairing cracks and damaged concrete
- Replacing bolts throughout the bridge
- Replacement of impacted concrete panels and curb ramps
Weather delayed the painting of the carbon fiber installed to strengthen the bridge and also minor restorations. SDOT says full completion is expected in the spring, so they should be done in the next few months. Let’s all hope better weather is on the horizon. Once the crews complete their work, the lane and sidewalk closures will open up.
The use and operation of the 90-year-old bridge will not change.
The project is funded by the 2015 Seattle Transportation Levy, also known as the Levy to Move Seattle. Because of the region’s earthquake risk, the city created a bridge seismic program to reinforce older bridges and the 41st pedestrian bridge was one of 16 selected.
