A recap from the intro to this week’s Fremont Neighbor Fix newsletter – sharing here because this info is too important to keep in inboxes only.
Hello! Halloween is here and up top you’ll see a full list of neighborhood events happening today and tomorrow. I really love how neighbors come together to organize block party events for the holiday. The Halibut Flats event, which is in Frelard along the 6th Ave Greenway, will even include a donation drive for Ballard Food Bank. We not only come together for festivities, but also support each other through hard times.
With the government shutdown impacting federal workers and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits starting Nov. 1, it’s time to come together and support our fellow neighbors and organizations that embody the concept of mutual aid. Here’s a quick list of nearby nonprofits that are ready to help those in need:
• Visit the Ballard Food Bank at 1400 NW Leary Way (Mon-Thu) for grocery-style selection, home delivery, and additional support.
• Families: check out FamilyWorks (temporarily at 4318 Stone Way N) for food, diapers, parenting support and more.
• For broader help, like eviction risk, benefit questions, legal assistance, turn to Solid Ground, formerly known as the Fremont Public Association (1501 N 45th St).
My network also shared this handy guide for free food in Seattle and the City of Seattle Assistance and Discounts page, where they list ways to save money on utilities, childcare, food, housing, home repairs, internet, and transportation.
Want to help? Consider donating non-perishable food, hygiene items, pet food, money, or your time. These orgs will need our help with the increased need.
If you know someone impacted, please forward this info. We are in this together!
