From 1977 to 1983, the Fremont Forum gave this neighborhood a print voice… a monthly community newspaper covering the people and issues that made Fremont what it was. When it went dark, that chapter closed. This month, Fremont Neighbor is opening a new one.
Vol. 1, No. 1 of the Fremont Neighbor Forum is now posted on poles and bulletin boards in Upper Fremont. The inaugural issue features a story about the Wecelium Creative Lab, the community creative space at 4401 Fremont Ave. N. that has quietly become one of the neighborhood’s most interesting gathering spots. Future issues will cover different corners of Fremont, distributed geographically near their subject matter. If you see a Forum on a pole, there’s a good chance the story it tells is about something within a block or two.
The Forum name is a nod to the original Fremont Forum, not a direct revival. Fremont Neighbor is its own thing, with its own voice. But the original paper served this community during a formative era and it deserves to be remembered. There’s more to that story – including a surprising piece of Fremont Forum history embedded in the neighborhood’s sidewalks – and that reporting is coming in a future issue.
Each issue of the Fremont Neighbor Forum will also appear on fremontneighbor.com. Scan the QR code on the pole posting or visit fremontneighbor.com/firstforum to read the first issue online. New subscribers get something special in the mail (hint: it’s magnetic, just like Fremont).
Keep your eyes on the poles.
