Notices posted to trees along Fremont Ave N near N 44th Street are alerting neighbors to a proposed removal of four red maples at 4401 Fremont Ave N. The public comment window closes Thursday, April 16.

The trees, ranging from 12 to 18 inches in diameter, are being removed to make way for a five-story, approximately 120-unit mixed-use apartment building with ground-floor commercial space and underground parking. The three existing buildings on the site will be demolished. The developer is Cohen Properties LLC.

According to the Seattle Department of Transportation permit, the project calls for replacing the four trees with six Japanese stewartia and two sugar maples, along with new permavoid tree wells (underground structures that prevent root damage to sidewalks while giving trees more room to grow).

Neighbors can submit comments to DOT_LA@seattle.gov by Thursday, April 16. The SDOT permit number is SDOTTRLA0000575.

Fremont Neighbor has reached out to the developer for further comment. A closer look at the 4401 Fremont Ave N project is coming soon.

Here is a drawing of what is coming at that site: https://web.seattle.gov/sdci/ShapingSeattle/buildings/Details/3039107-LU

    And the plan set: https://web.seattle.gov/SDCI/ShapingSeattle/File/Get/9651207

Shows tall buildings all the way up the street, as if they are already next door. But that’s not the case. Trees go up the street, in front of the next corner, WHICH IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION as a tall building. And they trees are staying put.

Begs the question: WHY DO THESE at 4401 NEED TO COME OUT? No reason.. just developer convenience. However, they have no trees on 44th Street side. I see no reason to pull these trees.

Please save the trees at 4401 Fremont Ave N.! These are mature 12-18″ diameter trees that are so badly needed in our city to clean the air and provide heat reduction. Please consider other folks in the neighborhood and not just the developer!! Please retain these trees – the developer can access the lot on 44th Street so these trees can remain.

Re: SDOTTRLA0000575 The removal of four trees as allowed by this permit again reduce our already shrinking tree canopy. While the addition of six Japanese stewartia and two sugar maples, along with the tree wells is laudable, saplings don’t replace full grown, mature trees. The new construction I see in my neighborhood has saplings planted, if it has any trees at all. Do four trees have to be cut down to accommodate the builder? There is room along the side street for access.

As a gardener myself, I want to know who will be watering and caring for these newly planted trees. Will it be the developer?.,.the owner of the building?…A resident?…the city?…an arborist contracted by the city? The trees will need plenty of water and periodic inspection for at least two years after they are planted. There also has to be a way to hold the responsible party accountable if the trees are not cared for properly. I have seen too many dead or dying plants and trees that have been put in to replace formerly mature plants/trees.

Thank you for considering my comments.
