Guitars, good talk, and a 1994 mini-golf course

Last week a group of us gathered on the back deck at The Handsome Jack Supply Co., the N. 36th shop that’s also a clubhouse. Between the barber and a customer strumming a guitar, the talk turned, as it does in Fremont, to how much the neighborhood has changed.

Which is how we got to Miracle on 34th Street: the artist-built, business-sponsored miniature golf course the Fremont Arts Council erected in 1994 as a fundraiser for the Northwest AIDS Foundation. The kind of interesting tidbit that makes people love the Center of the Universe.

That’s what these meetups are about. Every so often we get together with our Founding Neighbors, the readers who help keep Fremont Neighbor going, and swap stories and news about the place we all live.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, become a Founding Neighbor and get in the room: https://www.patreon.com/c/FremontNeighbor

Thanks to Murphy Gilson at Handsome Jack for hosting (and for taking the fabulous photos)!

That’s awesome! I was one of the artists who helped build and design one of the golf holes. That party was epic and all the neighbors were there! Truly a fun night . The parking lot behind the Fremont Tavern and the tavern are long gone. But those were the days🤪😂😍 I also had my two businesses in what we called at the time lower Fremont, ( now I just live here and my business is now in Upper Fremont by The Abbey- called Seattle Sound Temple) My frame shop Frame UP, started i don’t know.. maybe it was 42 years ago now, yup that’s it. I sold it long ago and it is still operating in Fremont as one of the best frame shops in Seattle, Frame UP. My art studio was upstairs above the Fremont Tavern and I loved the corner view from up there! I painted in that studio for 15 years and started the framing business up there too. Much mischief ensued there and much Fremont history too. I could go on and on… Anyway, I wish I was there to reminisce in the hopes that I would have found some of my old neighbors from those days! I still live here in Fremont in the house both my kids were born in and as the neighborhood changes I have changed too. Not sure how much longer I will want to be here but it has raised me, formed me, I have formed some it , and after raising my kids here, what a ride it has been!
