Where Fremont Gathers: Fremont Peak Park

Nestled in the northwest corner of Fremont is our hidden gem and urban oasis, Fremont Peak Park, a place where Fremonsters often gather.

Any evening with a beautiful sunset will bring neighbors out of their homes and to the park where they can take in the spectacular views. Friends and families gather on warm, sunny days to enjoy each other’s company in the environs of tall conifer trees, native plants and views of the Olympics and bustling Ballard.

The history of the park is a relatively new one. When the property went up for sale in 2001, a neighbor recognized the potential of the property as a park and the Friends of Fremont Peak Park quickly formed. The group raised $1.5 million from various groups, including well-known Fremonster Suzie Burke, and purchased the property.

“With a grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, the Friends hired landscape architects from the Seattle firm GGLO and artist Laura Haddad to form the park’s design team,” according to the FoFPP website. “A series of public meetings were held to solicit design ideas from the community.”

Neighbors wanted the natural wooded area preserved that could attract wildlife. In addition, there was a commitment to sustainability and art that would be seamlessly intertwined with the natural environment.

The park opened in 2007 and this Seattle Times article beautifully tells the story of how the park came to be.

The park is now maintained by Seattle Parks and Recreation and local volunteers.

This post is part of the Fremont Neighbor series highlighting local spots where people come together: cafés, bookstores, parks, pubs, and beyond. Where do you like to go in Fremont to be around others? Drop your favorite spots in the comments!
