The planned water main shutoff and street closures in Fremont that were scheduled for May 17 have been canceled.
According to the Seattle Department of Transportation, crews discovered an issue with existing trolley tracks beneath the pavement at the intersection of North 34th Street and Fremont Avenue North that requires additional work before proceeding. Officials have stated they will announce a rescheduled timeline for the water shutoff and street closures once it becomes available.
Despite this cancellation, construction on the Route 40 improvement project has already begun. Bus routes in the area, including Routes 31, 32, 40, and 62, have been rerouted to temporary stops that are expected to remain in place through 2025.
Key transit changes include:
- Northbound Route 40 relocated to Fremont Place North and North 36th Street near the Lenin statue
- Southbound Route 40 stop moved approximately 300-400 feet south to the far side of North 34th Street
The construction project aims to improve transit reliability on Route 40, which is currently Metro’s 5th highest ridership route with over 8,500 average weekday boardings. The project also includes replacing a century-old water main under Fremont Avenue North between North 34th Street and North 35th Street.
Residents can expect construction activities to continue in Fremont through 2025, with water service impacts affecting specific buildings at different times throughout the project. Officials have promised to provide at least one week’s notice via email and five days’ notice via flyers before any scheduled water shutoffs.
