Fremont Community Cleanup draws in neighbors to Patrick Place

Dennis Bateman addresses volunteers at the fourth annual Fremont Community Cleanup.

Saturday’s community cleanup drew dozens of volunteers for the fourth event organized by Dennis Bateman and the first held as part of One Seattle Day of Service.

The citywide volunteer initiative, organized by Mayor Bruce Harrell, brought together over 4,000 volunteers across more than 130 events throughout Seattle.

Patrick Place, which is run by Catholic Community Services, hosted the event. Patrick Place Apartments offers 71 units of affordable housing with on-site case management services for single adults who have experienced homelessness. According to Bateman, the primary purpose of the community cleanup was meant to break down barriers between the residents and local community.

Volunteers collected trash in Upper Fremont before gathering for a community discussion about ongoing neighborhood topics, including overgrown areas at A.B. Ernst Park, needed upkeep to the Helen Tapp memorial bench, and maintenance of art on utility boxes. Also, a plug was made for Fremont’s own Scooper Sonics, which is a litter pickup group founded after the inaugural Fremont Community Cleanup..

The organizers plan for the cleanup to return next year.

Marketime, Caffe Vita and Pecado Bueno donated refreshments.

Editor’s note: Alyson Teeter co-organized this event and is editor of Fremont Neighbor.
