Great progress at today’s A.B. Ernst Park cleanup! The volunteer crew made a huge difference by clearing out the invasive blackberry vines and other plants that were crowding the park entrance, creating much better visibility and access for everyone. The transformation is already noticeable, you can actually see into the park now!
But there’s still plenty of work to do throughout the rest of the park. Event organizer, Ron Wilhelm, could really use more hands for next Saturday’s cleanup on Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. They’re looking for about 15 adult volunteers (18 and older) to continue removing invasive plants, clearing garbage and trimming shrubs for better sight lines. The City of Seattle provides all tools so just wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes, and bring water.

I participated in the cleanup and while it was quite hot out, it was rewarding. Kudos to Ron Wilhelm for his leadership since he collected the supplies and offered useful advice.
It seems that park was neglected and not maintained which encourged the brambles to take over. While I have no idea of what is being proposed for the park going forward, the realities of limited resources and climate change should be carefully considered. I cherish the durable and elegant cypresses in the park which nicely complement the mission-sytle of the library, but detest all the concrete which does not contribute to a green and tranquil place where one could (someday) peacefully read a library book. Could we even shoot for a Green Flag Award?
