Neighbors spread out blankets and chairs at B.F. Day Playfield on Tuesday for a free outdoor screening of “School of Rock,” chosen by popular vote for the Fremont Neighborhood Council’s first ever Movie Night.
Approximately 200 attendees arrived early to grab popcorn and cotton candy, watch a short film by Black Jar Follies, and hear from community partners including the Fremont Arts Council, the Fremont Creative District, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, and the new B.F. Day Emergency Hub.
Several nearby restaurants offered takeout specials for the night, including LZ’s Tavern, Pecado Bueno, and Marmalade Gelato.
The warm evening marked the last 8 p.m. sunset until next spring.
FNC Board President Colleen Kaminski said she was thrilled by the turnout and thanked board member Brandon Shimko, who organized the event and logged many volunteer hours to pull it together.
Grants and sponsors covered the cost so the event could be free. Organizers said the funding also helped purchase equipment that can be used for future movie nights and other neighborhood events.
One of the FNC’s goals is for Seattle Parks and Recreation to designate B.F. Day Playfield as a Movie Night location next summer. This would provide logistical support and subsidized costs from the city agency.
Event sponsors included Lighthouse Coffee Roasters, Kevin Zelko Real Estate Broker, Comfort Keepers, Bill Crossman, Sundays Coffee, and the Holland Partner Group.
