New café under construction at former Starbucks site

Construction workers remodel the old Starbucks space at 3401 Fremont Ave. N. Photo by Alyson Teeter.

Good news, Fremont neighbors: that sad, shuttered Starbucks at 3401 Fremont Ave. N. is getting a second life as a new coffee shop.

After sitting vacant since the Starbucks closed in the early 2020s (the former Peet’s Coffee space before that), construction is now underway to transform the corner location into a brand-new café. Construction permits dated November 2025 show “tenant improvement to level 1 and mezzanine of existing mixed use building,” and workers are already hard at work inside.

The corner of Fremont and 34th has felt a little forlorn lately, the shuttered Starbucks, Key Bank, and Chase Bank all leaving gaps as you head south toward the bridge. But change is brewing.

While the new owner was too busy to chat (we tried!), their construction crew graciously let us peek inside at the progress. The space is taking shape, with an opening planned for the coming months.

Fremont History Bonus: The building housing Dreamland Bar (formerly Red Door) used to sit on this very corner before being moved in 2001 to make way for the current structure. Because of course Fremont would just pick up a building and scoot it over.

Stay tuned for updates as this corner comes back to life.
