Got a pile of foam packaging, dead batteries, worn-out electronics, or paper you’ve been meaning to shred?
Seattle Public Utilities runs a program for exactly that. Beyond the Cart is a series of free Recycling & Reuse Collection events, for the odds and ends that don’t belong in your home recycle or compost carts.
The events are free and open to all Seattle residents.
Three events remain on the 2026 calendar. The Maple Leaf stop is the closest to Fremont, and it’s this coming Saturday:
- Saturday, Aug. 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, 10005 32nd Ave. NE
- Saturday, Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wood Technology Center, 2310 S. Lane St.
- Saturday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Rainier Community Center parking lot, 4600 38th Ave. S.
Accepted items include:
- Foam blocks (polystyrene only)
- Household batteries (tape both ends with clear packing tape; no damaged or corroded batteries)
- Fluorescent tubes and bulbs (no broken bulbs; limit 4 feet)
- Small, empty propane camping canisters
- Small electronics such as TVs and computers
- Small appliances (non-Freon)
- Paper for shredding
- Household textiles
Not accepted: garbage, yard waste, regular household recycling, furniture, mattresses, hazardous waste, automotive or construction waste, car seats, and commercial loads. For those, the Where Does It Go? tool and special item pickup cover other options.
