A team named Mozzarella Mob won Fremont’s first Hunt the Universe, a free all-day scavenger hunt, at an awards gala at The Fremont Social on Oct. 21.

Nineteen teams, around 150 people in total, spent Oct. 10 working through 100 clues across Fremont. Hunt Master Luke Greenway said there were 2,000 clue submissions graded.

Organizers gave out Fremmies for standout submissions, from a stop-motion video to a telephone-pole flyer for snails. Winning team Mozzarella Mob won Fremmies for double dipping (turning a teammate into a puppet while making a cup of coffee) and for “shredding gnar” at Fremont’s fingerboard skate park, which is in the alley behind the Fremont Library.

Every Fremmy winner also got a pickle because jars of pickles were left over from a clue at The Picklr.

Some clues came from City Hall: Mayor Katie Wilson wrote one, and Councilmember Dionne Foster chose a location for another.

Local businesses and civic organizations joined the fun. Ophelia’s Books hid a treasure hunt in its shelves and the Seattle Scooper Sonics set up a trash pickup station.

The winning team’s prize package includes plants from the Indoor Sun Shoppe, Fremont Neighborhood Council T-shirts, Fremont Bouldering Project passes, Handsome Jack Supply Co. gift cards, and an Ophelia’s Books tote.

“We live in wild times, and I think that one of the great things that we can do in the face of all the darkness…is to come together in community, to care for each other, to do silly stuff together, and to be in our neighborhoods,” Greenway said.

Organizers have talked about holding the hunt again, but nothing is firm yet. Stay tuned by following at https://hunttheuniverse.com/ or https://www.instagram.com/hunt.the.universe/.
