Seattle leads the nation in bike commuting, Fremont is at the center of it

May is Bike Everywhere Month, and if recent numbers are any indication, Fremont is already doing its part.

Seattle cyclists logged more than 3.3 million commute miles in 2025, topping every other city in the country, according to a new report from fitness tracking app Strava covered by the Seattle Times last week. According to Strava’s data, the Westlake segment, which runs from the Fremont Bridge south to the Museum of History & Industry in South Lake Union, ranked as one of the three most popular cycling segments in the entire country.

The Fremont Bridge continues to be the Center of the Universe for Seattle’s biking trends since it’s a “pinch point” for cross-city bike routes. The Seattle Bike Blog reported that more than one million bike and scooter trips crossed the bridge in 2025, the first time since before the pandemic. 2026 is off to the best start on record and the Bike Blog’s Tom Fucoloro wrote, “The April total is in, and it is an April record by a mile. 103,266 trips is 8% higher than the previous April record set last year.”

Fucoloro also noted the context for these numbers: the fact that counts are approaching pre-pandemic highs even with high office vacancy rates and fewer commuters suggests biking in Seattle is growing beyond the traditional work commute.

A time to celebrate all things bicycling is Bike Everywhere Month, which is organized locally by the Cascade Bicycle Club and League of American Bicyclists. There are events throughout May and the big ones for the neighborhood are Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 6, and Bike Everywhere Day on Wednesday, May 13. Also on May 13, Cascade will host a Celebration Station near the Fremont Bridge from 6 to 9 a.m. with free coffee, pastries, music, and prizes.

Other Bike Everywhere Month events include a Bike Month Bash panel at Town Hall Seattle on May 6 featuring Fucoloro, representatives from Cascade, and the Seattle Streets Alliance; and the Bike Everywhere Luncheon fundraiser on May 21.
