The Fremont Branch of The Seattle Public Library will temporarily close Aug. 9 for installation of a new electric HVAC system.

The target for reopening is early November. The book return will be locked and the parking lot inaccessible for the duration.

The work is part of the Library’s Cooling Center Project, funded by a $5.5 million FEMA grant. The grant is equipping five historic Carnegie-era branches with systems designed to serve as cooling and smoke shelters during extreme weather events.

Two programs are affected:

  • Family Storytime, held Wednesday mornings from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m., will pause. (Patrons can find the same children’s librarian at the Queen Anne Branch on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. and Thursdays at 6:45 p.m.)
  • Write @ Fremont relocates to the Ballard Branch on Aug. 11, Sept. 8, and Oct. 13. Visit www.spl.org/calendar for more information.

Pending holds will transfer to the Ballard Branch on July 31. To request a different location, call 206-386-4636. Nearby branches with book drops include Ballard, Greenwood, Queen Anne, and Wallingford.

The HVAC installation will run concurrently with construction at the A.B. Ernst Park Addition next door at 719 N 35th St. Library and Seattle Parks staff are coordinating on both projects, including access to the library’s lower-level accessible entrance.
